Mistborn
The Deckbuilding Game
Deeply Satisfying, Brilliantly Brutal: A Solo Fan’s First Impressions of Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game
Let’s not beat around the bush: Mistborn: The Deckbuilding Game is an absolute jaw-dropper.
The very first impression you get when holding the box is that Brotherwise Games spared no expense. The packaging is premium, the card quality is superb, and the artwork is genuinely amazing. This is a game built to withstand years of heavy shuffling and tabletop wear. It looks and feels like a luxury addition to any shelf, which is exactly what a Mistborn fan wants to see.
But how does it actually play? As a relatively new fan of Brandon Sanderson’s series who bought this specifically for solo play, here is my honest take after my first trek through the Final Empire.
Navigating the Learning Curve
I’ll admit, when you first crack open the rulebook, it’s easy to feel a little lost. This genre of board game plays a bit like a complex video game—there are a lot of moving parts.
Pro Tip for New Players: Flip straight to the back of the rulebook. There is a turn overview there that acts as an absolute lifesaver.
Even with that cheat sheet, I still missed rules and botched a few mechanics on my first playthrough, but that’s completely normal for a game with this much depth.
A True Solo Experience (Not an Afterthought)
A lot of competitive board games slap on a “solo mode” that feels like a sad, watered-down version of the player-vs-player game. Mistborn doesn’t do that.
The solo and cooperative modes are entirely their own beasts. It gives you a genuine, active foe to battle, forcing you to make agonizing strategic choices. The sheer variety of viable strategies means you will constantly be micro-managing your moves and thinking, “Ah, I should have done that instead!” ### The Verdict: Incredible Replay Value I have only played through it once so far, and as much as you can love a game while constantly checking the rules, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The depth of the mechanics makes it obvious that the replayability here is massive.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed. If you are a fan of the books or just looking for a high-stakes, gorgeous solo challenge, this deserves a spot in your collection. I can’t wait to dive back in and explore it more.
