Calandra
The port of Calanda was one of the first ports to open to the rest of the world roughly one hundred years ago. There is no mistaking it for anything other than a settlement in Chappa, with hide-and-branch buildings, hard dirt and gravel roads, small hills, intersections decorated with small rock murals, and small animal sculptures perched atop the poles on the piers—all making it obvious the Chappans are the people living here.
The major exports that go through the port now are buffalo and deer hides; beaver and other small animal pelts and fur; bone; rock and sand art; and small river canoes and boats. They import exotic spices, vegetables, paint and pigments, as well as metal items and tools.
While the Chappans still treasure a nomadic, close-to-nature lifestyle, they also value practical items—metal tent stakes, knives, and horseshoes—that make life easier without weakening their bond with the land.
Chappa
Chappa is the island continent the goddess Agasa chose for the great game of the gods. She believed that her people could live fulfilling lives if they worked closely with nature. She thought staying close to the land would help prevent the divisions of wealth, greed, and materialism she had fought against before leaving her home.
Your First View of Calandra
The party stands on a boat, looking out at the city of Calandra—the official open port of the Nation of Chappa. Though still small compared to the great ports of other nations, Calandra is beautiful in a way none of the others are. The city is a living representation of Chappan culture: you can see it in the distinctive statues atop the poles that line the docks, in the row of warehouses along the shoreline, and even in the colored rocks that decorate the intersections. The air is rich with exotic spices and cooking meats; tabak, hides, and vegetables; and the clean, fresh water of the harbor. Voices and the sounds of commerce fill the air, but without the anger and demands of so many other ports of call. Several smaller vessels take on tabak and furs, while others unload the spices and small metal tools the Chappans crave.
Slightly spoiling Calandra’s beauty, you notice several men with bows watching the docks and surrounding waters—still wary after past attacks, and determined never again to allow hostile men to invade their land.
As will all of Diatis, this is the first draft. While I have pu time and effort into this version it is possible that the Legend Members of the Forge will find a better vesrion.
